The Eilean Mor Lighthouse was constructed in 1899 and was first lit on December 7th, 1899. The lighthouse was manned by three keepers, named: Thomas Marshall, James Ducat and Donald MacArthur it was these men’s job to keep the lighthouse lit. However, in December 1900, 12 months after it was first lit the light went out!
Captain James Harvey was sent to investigate the lighthouse after several concerns had been flagged up, Harvey also had a replacement lighthouse keeper named Joseph Moore. When Capetian Harvey arrived at the island he was a little surprised not to see anyone there to meet him, Harvey sent Moore to investigate. When Moore Reached the lighthouse he instantly knew something was wrong! The lighthouse doors were unlocked and one of the keeper’s coats was hanging on its peg. In the kitchen, there was half eaten food and the chairs had been overturned! Moore couldn’t locate the three keepers so returned to the ship. Capetian Harvey ordered a search of the island. However, after this search and subsequent searches nothing was ever found! Except some strange entry’s in the lighthouse log.
Written by Marshall on December 12th the log read: Severe winds the likes of which I have never seen before in 20 years! Marshall also noted: That Ducat was been unusually quiet and that MacArthur who was known to be a tough man had been crying. On the 13th it stated that the three men had all been praying. The last entry was on the 15th and read: Storm ended, sea calm, god is over all.
Since the mysterious disappearance of these three men other lighthouse keepers have complained about paranormal activity such as, disembodied voices, footsteps and strange sounds! It has been over 100 years since this mystery first happened and we are still no closer to figuring out what happened to these three men.
What do you think happened to these three lighthouse keepers?
