The Draugr | The Real Walking Dead

The Draugr are basically the equivalent to what we know as Zombies, Draugr are said to live in their graves. Vikings would be buried with gold and treasures for the afterlife and the Draugr were supposed to protect the graves from being raided. However, the Draugr were not your average guardian as they were nightmarish in appearance.

They are described as being black and swollen and would emerge from their graves as white smoke and would have superhuman strength. How Draugr where created were if after a Viking had died if he was found in an upright position then this would be an indicator that he would come back as a Draugr. If This was the case, a pair of open iron scissors were placed in the coffin with the deceased Viking. Along with straw which was placed amongst the clothing and the deceased Viking. The big toes would be tied together, or needles were drove through the soles of the feet to try and stop them from walking.

Then the coffin was lowered in three different directions to try and confuse the possible Draugr sense of direction. However, it was believed that the most effective way to stop a Draugr was to make a Corpse Door! A special door in the deceased home where he would be carried through feet first with lots of people surrounding him to confuse the corpse, the door was then bricked up to stop the Draugr from returning. Although it is said that this did not always work and if anyone was to try and rob the Vikings grave, they would be viciously attacked by the Draugr!

These entities were feared by the living, these mythical beings are the embodiment of the Living dead from Norse and Icelandic Mythology! A truly terrifying Mythical Creature.
